WORKSHOP 1 – Quality of Life in the City: Taking Rio+20 to your Community (Phase 1)

Objective: To share knowledge and experiences, and apply the ten principals of the "Living Planet" method, to help community leaders and social entrepreneurs improve quality of life in their urban communities. This workshop is divided into three phases. During the morning session on the first day the team will explain the "Living Planet" method, after which participants will have lunch together. On Saturday (June 16) participants will apply the "Living Planet" method as they survey socio-environmental problems during field work in Babilônia-Chapéu Mangueira and Morro dos Tabajaras (in the city of Rio de Janeiro). In the third phase, on Sunday, participants will present their results and action plans.
Outcomes: This workshop will provide tools for creating greener, safer and more prosperous communities. The workshop will be led by representatives from BioRegional, an organization based in England, and SEBRAE, along with members of local communities. It will provide a space for learning, sharing ideas and networking with experts, project managers and activists working to create sustainable cities. Participants will receive both theoretical and practical knowledge of the "Living Planet" method.

WORKSHOP 2 – Activating Empathy in Schools

Objective: While we are all capable of empathy, the ability to feel another's feelings, this skill must be developed. This workshop, facilitated by the Escuela Nova and Peace First, will explore how educators and parents can foster empathy in children and young people to allow them to develop as caring leaders, innovators and citizens.
Outcomes: Participants will be exposed to ideas, programs, and teaching and learning strategies from around the world that promote socio-emotional development and new, healthy approaches to problem solving and respect for diversity. These practices can be useful in dealing with bullying and other conflict situations, and can enable young people to be actively involved in problem solving.

Objective: To show multi-sector dialogue as a means to fostering responsible mining practices on a national level. Discussion will center around promoting conservation of natural resources, respect for human rights, and economic benefits on both a local and national level.
Outcomes: Participants will understand how dialogue groups can resolve social and environmental problems. They will also learn how to approach post-extractivist issues. They will explore how honest, respectful communication can foster trust and mutually beneficial solutions for different groups with different agendas.

Objectives: To deepen the understanding of business, environmental, academic and government leaders about a range of issues related to sustainability. To show the benefits to businesses that have implemented conservation practices and sustainable use of natural resources, as well as the risks of not incorporating these ideas into decision-making processes. To discuss best practices for socio-environmental management by looking at lessons learned by companies who have implemented these practices.
Outcomes: The Sustainable Dialogues program offers business leaders the opportunity to learn innovative ways to approach the current trending toward a green economy, where incorporating sustainable practices is a must.

CULTURAL EVENT – The Orchestra of Recycled Instruments: Sonidos de la Tierra

Description: Sonidos de la Tierra was founded in 2002 by social entrepreneurs to teach young people from low-income areas in Paraguay to make music in group with instruments crafted from recycled materials. Over 3,000 children from the country's poor communities have learned to play an instrument through participation in the program.

Objective: How has social entrepreneurship developed in Brazil and the world during the past decades? What role do social entrepreneurs play in the new economy? Is it possible to affect change by creating new markets? How can entrepreneurship foster positive change? What are the qualities of a social entrepreneur? Where do they come from and where at they going? What skills are they lacking? These and other questions about the future of social entrepreneurship will be discussed in this session.
Outcomes: Participants will explore theories and actual cases of social entrepreneurship and understand their impact on society. They will meet social entrepreneurs and investors and will have the opportunity to share dreams.
